Manufacturers typically rate furnace filters using the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value). MERV ratings range from 1 to 16. Higher-rated filters remove more particles from the air than their lower-rated counterparts. However, a higher-rated filter allows less air to flow through and can force your furnace to work harder than it should or even malfunction.

To prevent overworking or damaging your furnace, check if your furnace has a maximum MERV rating.

While both heat pump and furnace have their own pros and cons, the right heating solution for your home largely depends on your situation. A heat pump might offer better energy efficiency than a furnace if you live in a mild climate.

Since heat pumps struggle to keep up in cold temperatures, a furnace will perform more efficiently in an area that gets very cold during the winter.
